The Utah AIDS Foundation hosted their largest fundraiser of the year with the 2010 Oscars. This year the event was hosted at The Rail Events center in Salt Lake City, Utah. And it was a fantastic night with great food provided by Bambara – I took a bunch of photos cause it takes some practice to for good food photography. So I have included a number of those photographs in that blog post.

Channel 4 was there to cover the event and Chris Vanocur updated the audience through out the night and encouraged Stan Penfold to run for Governor in a few years. However, Stan Penfold plays a critical role at the Utah AIDS Foundation and he and the people of the UAF play a huge role in helping the thousands of Utahns affected by HIV/AIDS. They need your help as well – so visit http://www.utahaids.org/

I have photographed or volunteered at these dinners for a number of years – so I hope to see you there next year. And check out the full gallery of photographs on my SmugMug gallery.

written by dav.d

This week has been the Utah Bear Alliance’s Bear Fest 2010. And Saturday saw Bradon win Mr. Utah Bear 2010 and Kyle win Mr. Bear Cub 2010. It was a lot of fun and it was a great chance to use my new camera for most the events. Check out the full gallery of photos on SmugMug (photos are available to purchase prints and digital downloads).

QUAC Ski-n-Swim 2010

written by dav.d

QUAC hosts their annual Ski-n-Swim weekend every President’s Day. You might as well put that in the calendar and plan on 2011. It is on my to do list to get back in the pool. I might even be in shape by next year so I can get in the water as well and not just the photographer. Friday started at the Sheraton Hotel with the opening party and then Saturday had the swimming meet and water polo games.

The swim meet was at Steiner Pool at the University of Utah. The windows there are tiny compared to last year and with the overcast and rainy weather there wasn’t much light at all. I had to crank the ISO on my cameras to ISO 1600 and that was a bit painful. I shoot with the Nikon D300 and the Nikon D90 which do pretty well but not as good as their big brother cameras the D3, D700, and D3s for low light and low light sports performance. Since I am primarily a portrait photographer that is rarely an issue. But I do have the Nikon D700 and D3s on my wish list. And shooting sports reminds me why Nikon really does rule the roost in sports photography. With my Nikon D300 I can get 6 – 8 frame a second. The D3s will get about 10 and shoot in the dark. And the autofocus system on both cameras is dead on perfect.

But I am still going to be buying a Canon camera – cause I am a camera whore. Help support my camera habit by checking out the full gallery and purchase some photos! Momma needs a new camera!

Sunset on the Salt Lake Library – Day 160 of 365

written by dav.d

I almost didn’t take a photograph for today! I did take a photograph with my iPhone of a gorgeous sunset over the Salt Lake City Library and I didn’t think that much of it. I figured I would still take a better photo – and I never did. I was so wrapped up in other projects after this photo was taken that I would have missed a day in my 365 Daily Photograph Project. Fortunately, I did take this photo.

Jhonathan Lange Male Model Headshots

written by dav.d

I am still catching up on blogging some older photo shoots. These photo shoots have been from Christmas and January and I had given the photos to the clients a while ago just never blogged the dang photos. And I sometimes like to edit the photos a little bit more – but more and more I don’t think I need to claw through photographs in Photoshop. More and more I am able to photograph and they photos are ready right out of camera – which is cool.

And this was my first photo shoot with my Lastolite Ezybox softbox – and I really like the light it creates for portraits. This is also proof that I can photograph outdoors in the middle of winter. We can’t go for too long because the nose will turn red but we get some great shots in the time we have.

Provo Mountain Range – Day 152 of 365

written by dav.d

I am still a camera snob – would take a DSLR over a point and shoot everyday. But if I don’t have my DSLR on me then I have a point and shoot or at worse I have my iPhone. So I can still get a photograph – and then I can fix or upgrade the image with Photoshop and plugins. And I have talked about Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro – and I will talk about it again. It rocks as a photoshop plugin.

And it helps being single sometimes so it makes purchasing camera gear and software a hell of a lot easier. Wink.

Bradley Portrait Photography

written by dav.d

I am playing catch up with my bloggy blog – and finally posting some portrait sessions from the past month. This photo shoot was with Bradley. He turned out to be a natural in front of the camera – and I will say that when someone is a natural I end up taking a hell of a lot of photos. But in any case I will do my best to whittle the photos down to the best of the best. I don’t want to overwhelm people with hundreds of photos and I personally get overwhelmed if I have to sort through hundreds of photos.

And the best photographers show their best work – don’t settle or bother with mediocrity. There just isn’t time in life to bother with a mediocre photo. And as I improve as a photographer I really want to show off 3-4 photos tops in a blog. But I still like showing 8-15 photographs. Maybe for weddings I will show a ton.

For Bradley we started photographing outside with my Lastolite portable softbox and my Nikon SB-800s. And then we moved indoors to photograph a white seamless and black seamless. I used my Alien Bees studio lights for the indoor photography. It really pays to have two sets of lights. Woo hoo!
