Utah Pride’s Post-Pride-Party

written by dav.d

Utah Pride thanked their volunteers with a Post-Pride-Party. They announced the winners of the Utah Pride Parade, and had a raffle of prizes. I won a Budweiser Mini-Fridge (again)!

These photos include a lot of food photography – I am really trying to figure out and learn some food photography. Most all of the food photos are natural light. Check the full gallery of photos on my SmugMug. If I really wanted to rock the food photography I would have a softbox but there wasn’t room to work with all the food preparation going on. Either way they still look delicious.

Utah Pride 2010

written by dav.d

This is going to be a huge blog post! You can see over 2000 photos from Utah Pride on my SmugMug gallery. Here are just a few of those images.

Utah Pride is hosted at Washington Square in Salt Lake City on the first weekend in June. Why do we need Pride? Why do we have a parade? Why does anyone try and get attention? Because we are here, we are queer and you should be used to it by now.

Having grown up in the closet for the first 27 years of my life I know the feeling of thinking I was the only guy who liked guys – I thought I was the only gay who lived outside of San Francisco. The Pride celebration and the Pride parade are to let people know they are not alone and that there is a strong vibrant community here in Salt Lake City and other cities in Utah.

This event requires hundreds of volunteers working countless hours. Headed up by John Johnson and the Utah Pride Center the event is also a huge fundraiser. These funds are used to help homeless youth, fund community groups, awareness and programs that target the GLBT community. Learn more at the Utah Pride Center website.

The funds also bring in awesome entertainment such as comedian/actor Sandra Bernhard, the DC Cowboys (hot male dancers who were on America’s Got Talent), and other local performers.

Today, more and more, GLBT youth are able to come out of the closet and find people like them. Suicide in Utah is a huge problem and it is estimated a big percentage of those that attempt or commit suicide are GLBT youth. And there is the homeless problem in Utah. Countless youth are kicked out of their homes by parents who want to teach “tough love.” There is a certain place in hell reserved for those parents.

This year the Grand Marshal was Sister Dottie S. Dixon, who is played by Charles Lynn Frost. She is a Mormon mother from Spanish Fork, Utah, and she has a gay son named Donny.

I was not familiar with Sandra Bernhard – I had seen her on the Will & Grace show – and that was the extent of my knowledge. She was awesome. Hilarious, witty, and a great vocal talent.

And the Pride flag wraps up the Pride Parade. Hundreds of people carry the flag including this kid with the broken arm – just too cute.

Utah Pride’s 5K Run – Day 275 of 365

written by dav.d

I could be wrong, at my age that is very likely, however, I think that this was the first 5K race associated with Utah Pride. It was held in Memory Grove early (9am) in the morning and was a lot of fun. People of all ages and persusasions were in the race and it was really inspiring to watch as each crossed the finish line.

Sister Dottie S. Dixon was the voice of support as people approached the finish line – and she kept people’s spirits up. If you have ever run 3.1 miles or 5 kilometers you know the challenge and the reward of finishing. Check the full gallery on my SmugMug.

Grand Marshal Party for Utah Pride 2010

written by dav.d

Utah Pride kicked off the weekend with the Grand Marshal Reception at the Jewish Community Center overlooking the University of Utah. Sister Dottie S. Dixon (played by Charles Lynn Frost) is this year’s grand marshal. She is the mother of a gay son and hails from Spanish Fark, Utah.

The party was great and I took a TON of photos. Check them out on my SmugMug.

This Pride is going to be off the hook – I hope people come out and see all the hard work and the great fun and entertainment that has been planned and organized. My job is easy – I just point my camera and push the shutter. Easy as pie.

Utah Pride Needs Volunteers for Gay Pride 2010

written by dav.d

Gay Pride is about 3 months away! And Utah Pride, who organizes the event needs volunteers. 50,000 people will attend during the Friday, Saturday and Sunday in June and that requires volunteers for drinks, booths, parades, and more. And if you volunteer you get into the event free. And you support the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender community (GLBT).
