Storm Clouds with the Canon 17-40mm f/4 Lens

written by dav.d

Storm clouds made a perfect scene to try out my new lens. I bought the Canon 17-40mm f/4 lens and on a full frame sensor that lens is WIDE. The lens is an L series lens which means you pay a lot for a red stripe on the lens and it comes with a lens hood. I bought this lens even though it is f/4 because Canon wants to charge twice as much for f/2.8. And if I need low light performance on a wide angle I do have a 28mm f/1.8 lens. And the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 gets some mediocre reviews and isn’t as sharp as people would like. The 17-40mm is sharp and it has a bigger zoom range. So yay! New gear!

I absolutely love photographing on the Bonneville Salt Flats (I have been calling them the Utah Salt Flats for the longest time – oh well). And today I had the chance to photograph 3 people – two of them shirtless. The one female model didn’t want to go topless, go figure. lol

Anyway, I was nervous the rain would show up and make things impossible. However, the rain stayed away for the most part and only showed up as we were packing. So we got some amazing clouds and light and of course I had my big studio lights on hand. This is one preview photo of Jacob Whipple. He will be moving to North Carolina next month and we had to get to the Salt Flats before he left.
