Urban Portraits of Zeb

written by dav.d

I had the opportunity to photograph Zeb recently. His dad is a pro photographer and I think that his skill has been passed on to his son. Zeb posts some really fun and creative photographs on his Facebook page and it is really inspiring. Especially when you know that he is often using a point and shoot camera.

I took the chance for this photo shoot to try a new location near 700 South and 400 West. I also wanted to try out my new medium softbox with grid and my golden reflector umbrella. I think more and more I want to shoot with gridded lights.

To often when photographing everything gets even light and nothing stands out. And I end up dodging and burning the photograph to highlight the subject. The more I can do this before the shot is taken – the better.

It is a lot of fun to try new things – in many of these photographs I used a softbox on one side and a beauty dish on the other side. It is a bit of a pain to carry 2 lights around and set them up and fiddle with the battery. But it can be sooo worth it.

Next project? I think I will try and replicate this with my small speedlight instead of my large Alien Bees. The small flashes are a lot easier to move around – and you can be quite creative with them. But if I really wanted to get crazy I could mix both big lights and the speedlights and get some really unique lighting. That is when I will find an assistant to carry things.

But I love these photographs because we are mixing the golden sunlight with the artificial from the strobes. I think this will be my standard practice down the road. Why settle for just natural light?

And of course editing photos is a lot of fun when you find the right plugins and photoshop actions. They are tools and often just starting points. But it almost becomes something like cooking. You don’t want too many ingredients and you don’t want every photo to be radically different.

Lately I have been using Topaz Details a lot to create some cool localized contrast. It works pretty well – but can be a bit buggy under Snow Leopard. Hopefully they will have an update soon.

Stephen at Silver City & the Utah Salt Flats

written by dav.d

Warning! This is going to be a long post because we traveled 412 miles to take these photographs so I am going to show off about 21 of them. I couldn’t leave that many on the cutting room floor and not show something off. These portraits were a chance to explore new locations and use some new lighting gear. If anyone wants to get photos take out in the Utah Salt Flats let me know – it is a cool location to photograph.

We started in Silver City, Utah – outside of Eureka. We were hunting for ghost towns and didn’t find much – except we found this cool shack.

Silver City, Utah

Silver City, Utah

After photographing in Silver City we when up to the Salt Flats – it was a long day of driving. But totally worth it. Cause the salt flats are really unique. They have car races out there to try and break the land speed records. It is flat and it is solid. So if we do photograph out there again we will have to stop by Wendover for lunch or dinner. Wendover is just a few minutes away from the salt flats. And since the drive is about 1.5 – 2 hours out there we might as well eat.

Next time I photograph on the Salt Flats I will need to think of something to do in the way of props or something. Otherwise you are just standing there looking cool. And you might as well have something to do – maybe flying a kite, or dress up as if you are a jogger, or a bicyclist. Or if you have a really cool sports car.

Part of the goal (aside from finding new locations) was to learn to light differently. Often when I have been photographing and lighting I light up everything – everything is exposed fairly evenly and in Photoshop I would add some shadows. But this time I wanted to create some cool shadows and limit the light with gridded softboxes and a grid on my beauty dish.

Mao changes outfits for the next photograph

Here is a behind the scenes photograph (I love taking these photos) of today’s photo shoot with self described speedo model, Mao. I had taken some photographs of Mao more than a year and a half ago – and the photos turned out good then. And today we photographed at some new locations and this time we trekked out the big lights.

This photograph was at a local track and field location. We wanted to get on the grass of the football field but it is football season and the grass is being cured or fixed for the next game. So we kept the sports them by using the track. I will be working on these photos (among others from the past week). Lots to do and little time – and lack of time travel. :(

Club Jam’s Nuts & Bolts Private Party

written by dav.d

Club Jam had another fun party this weekend and of course as the amazing event photographer that I am – I was there to capture the fun. The theme was Nuts-N-Bolts. Everyone was given the choice to pick a nut or a bolt when they entered – and the challenge was to find someone who was compatible. A nut would find a bolt and vice versa. They were in different sizes to make it a challenge. Size queens…

And be sure to check the full gallery at SmugMug. Purchase them as well – look for the “Buy” button above the large photo. Purchases help me buy the latest and greatest in camera gear – and take better photos next time. It is the circle of life!

Pouring a beer the right way

Pouring a beer the right way

Apparently pouring beer is an art – there is the right way and a lot of wrong ways. You don’t want too much head on the beer. Allegedly it takes 199 seconds to pour a Guinness. Who knew?

And here is one of the wrong ways to pour a beer. Although I believe the machine was malfunctioning.

And this blog post – I wanted to focus a lot on the “detail photographs.” So I photographed the beer, the drinks, the nuts and bolts.

And here are a few photos of people trying to get the nuts and bolts to fit and match. Congratulations on those who found their soul mates through this party game. Although I am wondering if these kind of relationships last.

Utah Cyber Sluts & the Hotel Monoco host Bingo Night

The Utah Cyber Sluts

The Utah Cyber Sluts

Who knew that being a Salt Lake Photographer would be such a fun job? There are always chances to photograph events such as bingo night with the Utah Cyber Sluts. Every month they host bingo night. Friday the prizes were donated by the Hotel Monoco of Salt Lake City. And the proceeds were donated to the Utah AIDS Foundation. And it was a promotion night to encourage people to attend next months Red Party at the Hotel Monoco.

And a crowd favorite? If you commit a party foul you may lose your shirt and you have to dance and perform to collect dollar bills to earn back the privilege to wear your shirt again. Apparently women are exempt in this challenge? I don’t know why.

Photowalking Utah in HDR n Junk

written by dav.d

It has been a little while since I worked on some HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography. I was finally able to make it to a Photowalk Utah event. And so I grabbed my tripod, cable release, and Nikon D300 and took some photographs that I later turned into full HDR photographs.

Salt Lake Apartment Complex in HDR

Salt Lake Apartment Complex in HDR

The key to taking good HDR photographs? Tripod. This is the first step in creating the images. You want a series of photographs where your camera is solid as a rock – unmoving. And then you hope you can get a series of images where people aren’t moving or cars stay still.

Salt Lake Hallway in HDR

Salt Lake Hallway in HDR

The sun had set so I was taking some long exposures. Some of the exposures were about 30 seconds. For each of these images I took 7 shots. I could take 9 but I wanted to experiment and take only 7. I say ONLY, lol.

Glass and reflections really take on a surreal look in HDR. I think there is an added dimension to the photographs – such as the reflections and the shine on the windows of the train station in SLC.

Intermodal Hub Salt Lake City in HDR

Intermodal Hub Salt Lake City in HDR

You also want to find extreme light conditions. If you photograph at noon – there isn’t a lot of variation to the light – everything is bright. But if you can find bright lights and dark shadows you get a lot more out of an HDR photograph.

Lights and leaves of the city in HDR

Lights and leaves of the city in HDR

The last two photographs ARE NOT HDR photographs. The first one was a photograph of 4 cameras sitting on the dinner table at Jason’s deli. Can you find all four cameras? The Canon 7D, Canon G11, Pentax something, and the iPhone. Yes the iPhone counts as a camera – because if it is the only camera with you then it is the best camera you have.

Can you find all 4 cameras in this photograph?

And I whipped out the Nikkor f/2.8 105mm VR micro lens to take some macro shots. This was a rather cool photo of another lens. I know, I am a geek.

Utah Special Olympics – Day 45 of 365

Red team vs. Blue team

I had the opportunity to photograph at the Special Olympics in Utah Saturday. It was really cool to see these athletes compete. I was able to photograph basketball and bocce ball. And at times there were injured people everywhere! These athletes were vicious! They are very competitive and very good.

And the following athlete was wearing his medal as he was helped off the court. These photographs will be used in a slideshow later that will be themed about when you fall down you get back up. A message that can benefit everyone.

While photographing bocce ball I was told by one player that I better not distract them – and I wouldn’t dare. The intensity of play was thick. The concentration and emotion ran high. They were gunning to win and it was fun to watch.

And in addition to sport there was cotton candy, snow cones, and even stylists to fancy up the hair and give makeovers. Talk about fun. Next year hopefully I will be able to photograph more of the events – one day is not enough.

Eyes of Buddha

It was a busy day today! I had taken the day off from work so I could go to the Kiss Wedding Book seminar/factory tour. I will be blogging about that on my wedding photography website – probably tomorrow.

These photos are “detail photographs” feature the eye. It is said that the eye is the window into the soul and I think that is very poetic and true. They were items located at Club Jam and I was just photographing the details of the Club before karaoke started tonight.
