Utah Arts Festival – Day 297 of 365

written by dav.d

I finally made it to the Utah Arts Festival! I have never been and I almost didn’t make it. This weekend has been pretty busy with photo editing, World Cup Soccer disappointments, second shooting a wedding in Park City on Sunday. However, I made it!

I was there for a few hours and checked out the various artist’s booths. These artists travel to a number of art festivals – apparently there are no local Utah artists? I paid more attention to the photographers’ work. A lot of landscape – and some really, really, like the saturation dialog box in Photoshop.

And the one thing I was excited about was trying some of the food items. I know, I know, I am picking up my diet and exercise again on Monday. I don’t want to buy fat pants.

Once in a while I will break a photo shoot into two parts. On Sunday I photographed Sahil Hassan on the Utah Salt Flats – which takes a while to drive out then photograph and then drive back. It takes so much time that it would be too much to try and photograph in another location.

So we photographed in downtown near Pierpont Avenue and we got some amazing photographs. This is one I really like – and I will post more when I finish edits.

written by dav.d

Stoneground Restaurant celebrated 10 years in business this evening with a private party. And since I wasn’t in Moab due to rain I was able to go and photograph the event. Congratulations to Stoneground! Ten years is an achievement. And the food there is just fantastic.

See the full gallery of photos (and it was arrange that people can download the full resolution photos – they are unlocked). So enjoy!

Utah Pride 2010

written by dav.d

This is going to be a huge blog post! You can see over 2000 photos from Utah Pride on my SmugMug gallery. Here are just a few of those images.

Utah Pride is hosted at Washington Square in Salt Lake City on the first weekend in June. Why do we need Pride? Why do we have a parade? Why does anyone try and get attention? Because we are here, we are queer and you should be used to it by now.

Having grown up in the closet for the first 27 years of my life I know the feeling of thinking I was the only guy who liked guys – I thought I was the only gay who lived outside of San Francisco. The Pride celebration and the Pride parade are to let people know they are not alone and that there is a strong vibrant community here in Salt Lake City and other cities in Utah.

This event requires hundreds of volunteers working countless hours. Headed up by John Johnson and the Utah Pride Center the event is also a huge fundraiser. These funds are used to help homeless youth, fund community groups, awareness and programs that target the GLBT community. Learn more at the Utah Pride Center website.

The funds also bring in awesome entertainment such as comedian/actor Sandra Bernhard, the DC Cowboys (hot male dancers who were on America’s Got Talent), and other local performers.

Today, more and more, GLBT youth are able to come out of the closet and find people like them. Suicide in Utah is a huge problem and it is estimated a big percentage of those that attempt or commit suicide are GLBT youth. And there is the homeless problem in Utah. Countless youth are kicked out of their homes by parents who want to teach “tough love.” There is a certain place in hell reserved for those parents.

This year the Grand Marshal was Sister Dottie S. Dixon, who is played by Charles Lynn Frost. She is a Mormon mother from Spanish Fork, Utah, and she has a gay son named Donny.

I was not familiar with Sandra Bernhard – I had seen her on the Will & Grace show – and that was the extent of my knowledge. She was awesome. Hilarious, witty, and a great vocal talent.

Graham Gautschi, Male Model

written by dav.d

Sundays are a great day to get out and photograph in downtown Salt Lake City. It is quiet and almost a ghost town at times. I can grab my lights and my camera junk and photograph shirtless models. And they don’t have to be shirtless.

Graham recently decided to enter the competitive world of male modeling and he definitely has something to offer. He mentioned that he has an agency and some companies are expressing interest – which is always cool and exciting.

For this shoot we were in downtown Salt Lake City and then we headed out to the Great Salt Lake. We actually got into the lake (which smells funny, btw). Good thing I brought some old sneakers that would be later sacrificed to the trash bin.

The photo shoot was just a blast and we were able to create some really cool images. He mentioned that his agency is excited and looking through the photos. And they have been well received on Facebook, yay!

Jam & Superheroes

written by dav.d

Jam hosted Superhero Night on Friday and it was a lot of fun. And Jam is a perfect spot to start your club hopping if you end up going to Püre, Fusion, or other spots. Or keep dancing through the night at Jam. One of these days I might leave my camera at home and dance. The bartenders were in full force and DJ Tidy spun a killer mix of songs.
