Photowalking Utah: Ogden Edition – Day 205 of 365

written by dav.d

This is why I don’t go sun tanning – the following gentleman is 28 years old! I kid, but sun will age people.

The next photograph is an HDR photograph taken with my Canon 5D Mark II. Its 3 bracketed shots cannot hold a candle to my Nikon D300′s 9 bracketed shots. The sun is blown out here and the clouds are somewhat blown out as well. This would have been perfect if I was using my Nikon D300. And this is just one reason I will continue to photograph with Nikon AND Canon.

I think this is the first group photograph of a Photowalking Utah event that is in HDR. There are a few people that moved but for the most part it turned out pretty well. I don’t know if HDR was totally necessary. You can download for free the full size image from my SmugMug.

And here is a photograph of Nicolesy – and this is an example of “find the light and put them in it.” Perfect rim lighting makes for an awesome shot. If I had a reflector to throw some light onto Nicole’s face even better.

SmugMug in Salt Lake City – Day 138 of 365

written by dav.d

If you have been living under a rock you may not know I use SmugMug to sell prints, digital downloads and distribute my photos to the populace. SmugMug really is a great solution for photographers to share their creations. And SmugMug is constantly added new features that pros are really asking for – so yay!

And Zuma Photo has played host to the monthly SmugMug meetings – which is a great chance for the locals to get together and hang out and get to know each other. This photo is of a bunch of the SmugMuggers – many Twittering about the night.

Mammoth Men Party in Park City

written by dav.d

The Mammoth Men are a group of 12 photographers that love to travel and have fun together. Past trips included road trips of the southwest, California and most recently Park City, Utah.

This photo was taken by my tiny point and shoot (Nikon Coolpix S210). It fits in the pocket and takes video. But it sure doesn’t compare to my big cameras :(

Last night they invited local photographers to participate in a Crazy Photobooth. Here are three video clips of the event. Check their site to see some of their photos from the night.

dav.d and a castle

written by dav.d

I saw an online survey of photographers. The question was whether photographers liked having their own photograph taken. 74% said no. I guess that is one reason they picked up a camera – they want to be on the other side of the lens. Me, however, I love to be photographed. As long as I don’t look fat.

My problem? I don’t trust people with my camera. With lens and flash attached it is probably about 10-12 lbs. And people have slippery fingers.  I had the chance to go photographing the Provo Castle with another photographer. We found a model who wanted some headshots. So we photographed each other and the model.

Here is the first photo of me! Woo hoo! Brian Gordon took the photo and was kind enough to let me do my special brand of retouching. Me likey!

And check out Brian Gordon’s website.

Lightroom Presets

written by dav.d

Time is of the essence when you are a photographer – when you take hundreds or thousands of photos you need to do so quickly. My secret should be every photographer’s secret – Adobe Lightroom. If you don’t use it – ugh – you don’t know what you are missing and you are wasting your valuable time!

Some of my favorite Lightroom presets can be purchased or downloaded from Nichole Van, Gavin Seim, and Matt Kloskowski. I of course use Photoshop and a slew of actions to give photos that extra kick, however, I reserve photoshop for the best of the best photos and then the next tier of photos I apply the Lightroom presets.
