My day job is a web designer for Nu Skin. I have been working there for 10 years as of July 11th. It is surreal to think that it has already been 10 years! I was 27 at the time – and now I am so old! However, I still have somewhat of a youthful look since I use Nu Skin products daily. I haven’t bought a bottle of shampoo in those ten years. As a benefit to employees we get a certain allotment of points to use on products from the company. I know it works as long as I look younger than my brothers (I am the oldest of 7 kids – 5 of them are boys).

As recognition of 10 years of work Nu Skin gives employees a pin – as you see below. We also get a very generous bonus! Woo hoo! It really is a great company to work for with great benefits, bonuses and products. And I like/tolerate my co-workers ;)

With my bonus I will be buying a macro lens for my Canon 5D Mark II. The Nu Skin pin above was photographed with my 50mm f/1.2 lens – and it is cropped because that is as close as I can get with my Canon lenses. To get any closer will require a macro lens. So hooray! I will be purchasing the Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS lens. I have rented that lens before and it works great. And this way, I won’t always have to carry my Nikon camera and lenses just to shoot macro.

Here is the original photograph below – you can definitely see why I need a macro. Mmmmmmm, macro!

It’s Year of the Tiger and Nu Skin Employees Celebrate!

written by dav.d

A number of Nu Skin employees through a potluck lunch to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is the year of the Tiger and any reason to celebrate is a good reason.

This was not Chinese food from the local Panda Express or PF Chang. And I love trying new food and especially if it has an international flavor. The first item looks like jello with nuts and fruit, however, it is purple rice with 9 different grains.

See about 30 photographs from lunch.

And I had to sample a little bit of everything! It was all good: vegetables, chicken, tofu, bean sprouts, and some rather spicy food to go with it.

And the perfect dessert? Birthday cupcakes. I am guessing that Smith’s didn’t have any Chinese New Year’s cupcakes.

Happy birthday!?

I took a number of photographs for Nu Skin today. They had people who were using new products and we wanted to photograph them before and after to see how much change can be seen. In this case the person is using product on only the right side of their face – and you can compare wrinkles, texture and more from one side to the other. It is pretty cool to see.

And as an employee of Nu Skin – one of the benefits is we get free product each month. I know it works if I look younger than my brothers – I am the oldest of 5 boys.

I had the opportunity to photograph a Red Carpet event at Nu Skin in Provo, Utah. To recognize distributors who have worked hard the company will have a red carpet and a stretch limo. Employees of Nu Skin will clap and cheer as the distributors then walk (or run) down the red carpet.

In this photograph we have Blake Roney – chairman of the board for Nu Skin. This week Nu Skin plays host to their global convention in Los Angeles, California.

Executive Portraits – Day 36 of 365

Executive Portrait Photograph

Today I had the opportunity to photograph portraits for several executives at Nu Skin in Provo. A few of them are management but i won’t split hairs on how important someone is – everyone is important!

And I will confess – I find these business portraits rather boring. But in many cases large corporations want plain vanilla photographs. There is an advantage because you often have to retake photos of people or different people months or years apart and you want some consistancy in the photographs. If half your portraits have a blue background and have clam shell lighting while the other half have brown backgrounds and traditional 3-point lighting then there are going to be problems.

So it was my job to recreate the same style, background, and look of other existing executive portraits. Woo hoo! The nice thing? Jennifer is going to work on all the photoshop for these photographs. So all I had to do was take the photos – make sure the exposure was correct in Adobe Lightroom and burn a disk with the photos in JPG and DNG format. And my job is done.

For this particular photo (which is my daily photograph) I did toy around with a skin softening technique. I don’t have Nik Software’s Color Efex Pro 3 on this particular computer. That plugin has and awesome Dynamic Skin Softener effect that I use from time to time. So I edited it from scratch using a technique I learned from Lee Varis’ book “Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies.” It is a really good book and I highly recommend it.

And it is always good to practice working on Photoshop from scratch. It isn’t good to become too dependent on actions and plugins. You get rusty.

Nu Skin Scientists

Nu Skin Scientists

I had the opportunity to photograph the Scientific Advisory Board for Nu Skin and Pharmanex yesterday. Group shots like this are not the most exciting – but they are quick. The most time is spent getting everyone’s attention and standing in position.

My job as a photographer is to make a photo shoot as enjoyable and as fast as possible. This shot took 5 seconds. But I set up the chairs in 4 minutes, corralled people in 8 minutes, arranged people in 3 minutes. And we were done – and they look great. I didn’t even need to swap eyes from other shots – because no one blinked! Woo hoo!

Nu Skin Christmas Party

written by dav.d

I had the opportunity to photograph the Nu Skin Christmas party this year. There is entertainment, prizes, food and more.

The entertainment was the Thrillionaires. An impromptu comedy troupe from Provo, Utah. They were very entertaining with an impromptu story involving hobos, diapers, singing and more. Don’t ask – these stories aren’t suppose to make sense. The audience shouts out ideas and the troupe goes from there.

After the performance prizes were given away in a drawing. I never have much luck in these drawings – and this year was no different. However, people walked away with computers, money, GPS devices, several televisions. Including a 73″ HDTV with DLP.

And a few people were given the chance to dance for cash. Those who did danced – danced their way to $500 each. Not to bad.

Here are a few photos from the evening:

Nu Skin – Halloween 2008

written by dav.d

Halloween is quickly becoming America’s most favorite holiday. I recently saw advertised a Halloween Tree – just like a Christmas tree but black and has lights colored for halloween. Probably not the best idea but it is a sign that Halloween is rather popular.

For those of you not in the know – my day job is a web designer for Nu Skin. I commute Monday thru Friday to the capital of happy valley. And Nu Skin loves halloween. They decorate pumpkins there are prizes for the best costumes and as in this Halloween falling on a Friday it was virtually deserted. Those that did show up dressed up in costume and some losers didn’t ;)

I went as a paparazzo and I did take a lot of pictures. Here is a link to the gallery or click any of the following preview photos.
