Macro Shot of Moisturizer – Day 179 of 365

written by dav.d

I thought I would play around with stacking lenses again – last time I stacked lenses to photograph a penny – this time it is moisturizing gel that I use to try and imitate the look of youth. I know that my facial regimen works if I look younger than my brothers (I’m the oldest).

This photograph is cropped – the second photograph is another shot without cropping. Stacking lenses isn’t easy – I am sure there is a huge science and collection of equipment designed to get these super macro shots – besides just using a microscope – a microscope is cheating ;)

The amount of gel would fit on my fingernail of my index finger – and being that I have short girly fingers that isn’t much.

Macro and DOUBLE Macro – Day 168 of 365

written by dav.d

I have never tried to double up a macro lens with a second lens – until today. And it is pretty cool! My macro lens is the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR lens – it is very sharp and it is a lot of fun. I took my 85mm f/1.8 and opened up the aperture and photographed a penny. This shot is with both lenses. The second shot is just the macro lens.

Macro lens combined with an 85mm lens - goes SUPER MACRO!

You can see how much more magnification you can achieve with stacked lenses. To do this you turn aroudn the second lens and just hold it up to the front of the macro lens. I able to even use the auto focus! Which I would be fine manual focusing. There has to be a better way to hold the lenses together than with just my hands.

This is why the 85mm f/1.8 is perfect as a second lens – you can see how wide the glass is to shoot through. This is one of the advantages of having an older lens with an aperture ring. Newer Nikkor lenses that are G series do not have an aperture ring and close down when not attached to a camera. Which sucks if you want to shoot through the lens. I’ll have to practice some more.

I am playing catch up on my daily photographs – I have been photographing but not blogging them. So, playing catch up. Here is the photograph for Wednesday, January 13th. Money has been on my mind because I am learning Quickbooks, starting work on my taxes and sales taxes and blah blah blah.

So this is another macro photograph of some coins – quarters specifically.

Bobba Fetta – Action Figure – Day 125 of 365

written by dav.d

Here is a macro photograph of one of my favorite villians – Bobba Fett. He isn’t as evil as Darth Vader but Bobba Fett does have all the cool toys. Toys are what make characters like Bobba Fett, Batman, James Bond and others cool. If they have a utility belt or a cool grappling hook in a gun – they are cool.

Macro photography of rust texture

I did take this yesterday – but didn’t have the chance to post it till the next day – thank goodness I can post date blog posts. No one will ever know – unless I tell them.

This is a macro photograph of rust on a pole. I should try photographing textures more often – especially at the macro level.

Marigolds in Macro – Day 54 of 365

written by dav.d

Face it – everything and everyone has been photographed. Every kind of flower has been photographed repeatedly. All I can do as a photographer is to capture and create photographs with my vision. Hopefully it is unique.

Growing up my mom would always plant flowers around the house – and one of those – the ones I most remember were marigolds. So I was happy to find some near work and I stopped to photograph them. These are handheld with my macro lens.

Lord of the Rings is no match for the power of the Dark Side

Lord of the Rings is no match for the power of the Dark Side

This photograph a day for 365 days is making me thing different about photography. So often I am scrambling to find something to photograph. Today I decided to put more effort into creating a photograph. For those who know me – they know my desk is covered with Star Wars action figures, Lord of the Rings action figures, even an Optimus Prime Transformer.

So I took two of the action figures with swords (one was a lightsaber) and I posed them. I photographed them with my Nikkor 105mm macro lens. I lit the photograph with one speedlight to camera left. It gives more depth to the photo than using natural light. This photograph was also taken at f/7.1 and hand held.

I then got creative with some special effects, wacom tablet and of course photoshop. I even added a bit of a glow to the Jedi Knight’s face to make the lightsaber’s glow interact more with the environment of the photograph.

Perhaps the way to make special effects more real is to minimize their effect – but that is something to work on.
