Digital Holga via my Lensbaby – Day 154 of 365

written by dav.d

Now that I have finally taken photos with a real Holga camera – I know what it looks like and the qualities of a true film camera with a plastic lens. And no matter how much I joke that film with the wave of the future – digital really is where it is going.

This photograph is pretty dang close to a digital version of a Holga camera. I used the Lensbaby Muse with their plastic lens accessory. I put in the f/8 aperture ring and I had the lens straight forward rather than try and tilt the plane of focus. I didn’t try to up the contrast – because the plastic lens is supposed to be less contrasty and just soft at the edges. The one thing I couldn’t fake too much is that the Holga shoots in a square format. This will work perfectly when I upgrade to a full frame 35mm DSLR. Until then I am stuck with the cropped version.

But I am still a fan of Holgas. But to have digital and the Lensbaby really does lead to some creativity that film can’t achieve. And of course with digital you know exactly what you shot without waiting to finish the whole roll of film and then wait to get it processed.

Christmas Tree through a Lensbaby

written by dav.d

The Lensbaby is a lot of fun – and sometimes you stumble on a happy accident like this photograph. People think the stars were done in Photoshop. Nope, this photograph is pretty much what it looked like right out of the camera. I did edit the color and contrast using Nik Software’s brand new Viveza 2. But other than that it is unedited. I used a star shaped aperture ring to create the star effects.

Lensbaby play with aperture disks – Day 85 of 365

written by dav.d

To master something you need to do it over and over again. And using a Lensbaby will take a lot of practice to master. Today most of these shots were taken with custom aperture disk – either shaped in a heart or a star. This makes the highlights look like a heart or a star. Pretty cool effect.

Most of these shots are meant to be out of focus so the light bulbs I photographed will look like a star or a heart.

The Loft – Day 74 of 365

written by dav.d

My practice with the Lensbaby continues – and here is a photograph of The Loft in Provo, Utah. I believe it is a dance club in the heart of Provo. Who knew they had a night life. With the cold weather – I really don’t like to stay outside much and spend lots of time photographing. Go figure.

And here is the back door to The Loft – actually it is right next to the front door to The Loft. Hooray for non-alcoholic dance clubs in Utah? I am sure it will be a rousing success. Cause I personally hate the logo.

Fruit Juice vs. Soda – Day 71 of 365

written by dav.d

Until wine fountains replace soda fountains in the United States we are somewhat limited in our choices of refreshment. Granted water is supposed to be the best thing for the human body – but water can be boring. One thing I like is the Naked Juice – juice that is pretty much natural.

And for those who like soda or as they call it in Utah – pop. Or in Georgia they call it Coke – even if it is orange soda. Regular soda will make you fat. Diet soda will give you brain cancer (allegedly). So you can pick which way you want to die.

These photographs were taken with my Lensbaby. I had attached the wide angle attachement and I switched the double glass optic for the single glass optic. This optic is designed to imitate old fashioned cameras from the turn of the century (1800-1900 NOT 1900-2000). Weird that I have to specify.

Crazy Shaped Apertures with Lensbaby – Day 69 of 365

written by dav.d

Another photowalk at lunch – this time with a Lensbaby but this time I put a star shaped aperture ring in the lens – this creates stars in the highlights of the blurry portions of the photograph. Pretty cool – can it be faked in photoshop? Yes, the software program Alien Skin Bokeh can do this but you have to do this in photoshop and it is extra work. And sometimes – you want to do as much as you can in camera without resorting to photoshop.

Freedom Boulevard through a Lensbaby – Day 67 of 365

Freedom Boulevard, Provo, Utah

The sun sets so quickly these days – Standard Time blows! I much prefer staying on Daylight Savings Time. So I didn’t have a lot of time for the photograph of the day. I will try to photograph at lunch or in the morning more often. And I am continuing my practice of the Lensbaby. I really think it benefits to photograph with a tripod – especially when using a Lensbaby and the need to use manual focus.
