Jhonathan Lange Male Model Headshots

written by dav.d

I am still catching up on blogging some older photo shoots. These photo shoots have been from Christmas and January and I had given the photos to the clients a while ago just never blogged the dang photos. And I sometimes like to edit the photos a little bit more – but more and more I don’t think I need to claw through photographs in Photoshop. More and more I am able to photograph and they photos are ready right out of camera – which is cool.

And this was my first photo shoot with my Lastolite Ezybox softbox – and I really like the light it creates for portraits. This is also proof that I can photograph outdoors in the middle of winter. We can’t go for too long because the nose will turn red but we get some great shots in the time we have.

Kenze’s Salt Lake City Photo Shoot

written by dav.d

Every actor and aspiring actor needs headshots – and we used downtown Salt Lake City for Kenze’s headshots. Downtown is great because we can photograph and get different backgrounds and textures with a little bit of walking.

And I used my portable softbox with my Nikon SB-800 – that really works well and I think it is THE way to get great outdoor portraits. This way I get the shallow depth of field and awesome bokeh with a 50mm f/1.4 lens or my 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Both work great with the high speed flash sync. You can’t get that with Alien Bees or other studio flash.

Kenze – Day 133 of 365

written by dav.d

Kenze is an aspiring actor who needed some headshots – so we used downtown Salt Lake City as our studio – and braving the cold we were able to get some very cool photos – these photos are just the preview photos. I post them since they are part of my 365 day project of at least a photo a day for a year straight.

The first photograph was shot using my Nikkor 50mm lens – I love this lens. I can be pretty close to the subject and get some wonderful bokeh – the blurry part of the photograph behind the subject.

The second photograph is shot with my Nikkor 70-200mm lens – and it is racked out to 200mm and is at f/2.8. This lens is a workhorse for portrait photography. However, I have to stand a lot further away from the subject – but it also creates a very cool bokeh for the subject.

I am also using my Lastolite softbox to light the subject. I really don’t think I can shoot outside again without that setup – it really helps the subject pop and stand out. Subjects need light and because I can shoot at a 1/8000th of a second with the Nikon CLS on my SB-800 lights I can shoot at f/1.4 or f/2.8. If I was using my Alien Bees I would have to limit my shutter speed to 1/250th of a second and often that means I am shooting at f/11 – huge difference in the bokeh.

Actors and cameras – they go hand in hand. Actors will always need headshots – and somehow that can be a judge of your acting chops. But it is at least a foot in the door and I love that I can help create the photograph that may open those doors.
