Utah Pride 2010

written by dav.d

This is going to be a huge blog post! You can see over 2000 photos from Utah Pride on my SmugMug gallery. Here are just a few of those images.

Utah Pride is hosted at Washington Square in Salt Lake City on the first weekend in June. Why do we need Pride? Why do we have a parade? Why does anyone try and get attention? Because we are here, we are queer and you should be used to it by now.

Having grown up in the closet for the first 27 years of my life I know the feeling of thinking I was the only guy who liked guys – I thought I was the only gay who lived outside of San Francisco. The Pride celebration and the Pride parade are to let people know they are not alone and that there is a strong vibrant community here in Salt Lake City and other cities in Utah.

This event requires hundreds of volunteers working countless hours. Headed up by John Johnson and the Utah Pride Center the event is also a huge fundraiser. These funds are used to help homeless youth, fund community groups, awareness and programs that target the GLBT community. Learn more at the Utah Pride Center website.

The funds also bring in awesome entertainment such as comedian/actor Sandra Bernhard, the DC Cowboys (hot male dancers who were on America’s Got Talent), and other local performers.

Today, more and more, GLBT youth are able to come out of the closet and find people like them. Suicide in Utah is a huge problem and it is estimated a big percentage of those that attempt or commit suicide are GLBT youth. And there is the homeless problem in Utah. Countless youth are kicked out of their homes by parents who want to teach “tough love.” There is a certain place in hell reserved for those parents.

This year the Grand Marshal was Sister Dottie S. Dixon, who is played by Charles Lynn Frost. She is a Mormon mother from Spanish Fork, Utah, and she has a gay son named Donny.

I was not familiar with Sandra Bernhard – I had seen her on the Will & Grace show – and that was the extent of my knowledge. She was awesome. Hilarious, witty, and a great vocal talent.

Püre’s Halfway to Halloween Party

written by dav.d

Püre hosted their Halfway to Halloween Party on Friday and it was mucho fun and mucho people there. The music was great the lighting was gorgeous and I was able to use my new lenses (including my new favorite the Canon 85mm f/1.2 lens). I also used the macro lens I am renting. With high ISO settings on the camera and f/1.2 I can almost photograph in the dark. It also means that when I photograph I get all the club lighting in the photograph rather than just a black background with ghostly white people (washed out by flash).

Check the full gallery of photographs on my SmugMug. And of course buy some – they will help me buy new camera gear and take better photos in the future.

Jamming Karaoke at Jam

written by dav.d

Karaoke night at Jam is a lot of fun. I personally slaughtered “Love Shack” by the B-52s. I didn’t realize how many lyrics I didn’t know and I think I was trying to sing all the parts. Oh well, I will try something simple – like Bohemian Rhapsody next time. And I was able to try out my 85mm f/1.2 at the club which was great practice before I used the lens at Püre on Friday.

And Mr. Brian Gordon does a great job running karaoke.

Check out the full gallery on my SmugMug.

HIV/AIDS affects not just those who are infected with this disease. There is no cure for the disease. Yes, there are drugs out there that have helped to save the lives of many people, however, it is not a cure. The best way to handle this disease is prevention.

The Utah AIDS Foundation needed some photography to help promote awareness in the Gay community in Utah. Safe sex, condoms and brochures are just a few things that will help. Knowledge is power. And what better way to get gay men’s attention than to use a guy with muscles in some photos?

We were going to photograph these outdoors in a urban-ish location but the weather did not cooperate. So we used Studio 717 for some studio photography and the photos turned out great. I will post more photos soon but here is one photograph for my daily photograph project.

I photographed the whole session with my Canon 85mm f/1.2 lens. That thing is sharp! I love it and it is my new favorite lens.

Utah Pride Needs Volunteers for Gay Pride 2010

written by dav.d

Gay Pride is about 3 months away! And Utah Pride, who organizes the event needs volunteers. 50,000 people will attend during the Friday, Saturday and Sunday in June and that requires volunteers for drinks, booths, parades, and more. And if you volunteer you get into the event free. And you support the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender community (GLBT).

Püre White Party – Day 211 of 365

written by dav.d

Püre held its first White Party on Friday. And there were a ton of people. In Utah this is Conference weekend and surprisingly enough this is the busiest weekend for clubs on Fridays and Saturdays. Who would have thunk that?!

Check out the full gallery of photographs on my SmugMug – and buy some photos – it helps me save up for better camera gear.

David Daniels, BYU Graduate & BYU Fan

written by dav.d

There has been a lot of discussion this week about BYU t-shirts and BYU jackets. Yes, I am the photographer who wore a BYU jacket to the interview with Senator Chris Buttar’s interview with Reed Cowan. Why? Because I am a BYU graduate and I am a HUGE BYU fan – but I am working out and dieting. I am a true blue BYU fan.

Here is a photograph of me in December 2007 wearing the now infamous BYU Jacket. It is a very handsome jacket – I even bought it on sale so I could wear it to the Las Vegas Bowl game where BYU beat UCLA when they blocked a last second kick.

I wish the discussion would be more on the film itself. Senator Chris Buttars said what he said – with no deception and no coercion. I don’t think we really needed to ask Chris Buttars many questions because he was very good at talking and talking and talking.

I would encourage everyone to see 8: The Mormon Proposition if and when it comes to a theater near you. I saw the movie last Sunday and I cried. I cried for the people who have committed suicide for being gay. I cried for the people who were subjected to electroshock therapy for being gay. I cried for the youth who are homeless because they were kicked out of their family’s home for being gay.

Below is a photograph I took of 3 gay youth featured in 8: The Mormon Proposition. They are showing a “squat” – an abandoned building or basement where they can shelter themselves from the freezing winter nights in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. I have learned that the day after this photograph was taken the youth in the glasses – in the middle – was brutally beaten with a metal pipe to the head while people called him “faggot.” He almost died and was in intensive care and is still recovering. That hate crime was never reported.

I am the oldest of 7 children. I am gay. I have a gay brother. I served an honorable mission to Puerto Rico from 1992-94. I returned and married my best friend – and even though the marriage didn’t last my friendship with her still does. I don’t feel welcome in the LDS (Mormon) church and so I don’t attend.

Hate crimes, discrimination in marriage, employment, housing, health benefits, and even homelessness are things that are destructive. I cannot idly sit on the sidelines and ignore the injustice and inequality.

I am gay. I am a BYU graduate. I vote. I photograph so that I will tell the story of the GLBT community through my photographs. I am a child of God.
