This week has been the Utah Bear Alliance’s Bear Fest 2010. And Saturday saw Bradon win Mr. Utah Bear 2010 and Kyle win Mr. Bear Cub 2010. It was a lot of fun and it was a great chance to use my new camera for most the events. Check out the full gallery of photos on SmugMug (photos are available to purchase prints and digital downloads).

David Daniels, BYU Graduate & BYU Fan
written by dav.dThere has been a lot of discussion this week about BYU t-shirts and BYU jackets. Yes, I am the photographer who wore a BYU jacket to the interview with Senator Chris Buttar’s interview with Reed Cowan. Why? Because I am a BYU graduate and I am a HUGE BYU fan – but I am working out and dieting. I am a true blue BYU fan.
Here is a photograph of me in December 2007 wearing the now infamous BYU Jacket. It is a very handsome jacket – I even bought it on sale so I could wear it to the Las Vegas Bowl game where BYU beat UCLA when they blocked a last second kick.
I wish the discussion would be more on the film itself. Senator Chris Buttars said what he said – with no deception and no coercion. I don’t think we really needed to ask Chris Buttars many questions because he was very good at talking and talking and talking.
I would encourage everyone to see 8: The Mormon Proposition if and when it comes to a theater near you. I saw the movie last Sunday and I cried. I cried for the people who have committed suicide for being gay. I cried for the people who were subjected to electroshock therapy for being gay. I cried for the youth who are homeless because they were kicked out of their family’s home for being gay.
Below is a photograph I took of 3 gay youth featured in 8: The Mormon Proposition. They are showing a “squat” – an abandoned building or basement where they can shelter themselves from the freezing winter nights in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. I have learned that the day after this photograph was taken the youth in the glasses – in the middle – was brutally beaten with a metal pipe to the head while people called him “faggot.” He almost died and was in intensive care and is still recovering. That hate crime was never reported.
I am the oldest of 7 children. I am gay. I have a gay brother. I served an honorable mission to Puerto Rico from 1992-94. I returned and married my best friend – and even though the marriage didn’t last my friendship with her still does. I don’t feel welcome in the LDS (Mormon) church and so I don’t attend.
Hate crimes, discrimination in marriage, employment, housing, health benefits, and even homelessness are things that are destructive. I cannot idly sit on the sidelines and ignore the injustice and inequality.
I am gay. I am a BYU graduate. I vote. I photograph so that I will tell the story of the GLBT community through my photographs. I am a child of God.

360° La Revista Gay en Español de Utah
written by dav.dIt is fun being a photographer – and sometimes I am called famous – which is a bit embarrassing. A while ago I photographed what became the cover to a new spanish language magazine called 360°.
And this Saturday I will be photographing a few covers for the 360° magazine again. We will probably take a few photos so we have several months covered. This was the cover that I shot.

Outlet Utah – Day 87 of 365
written by dav.dThese are some headshots of Outlet Utah. They needed headshots – and I am the person to go do in the GLBT community. These photographs were created with a Nikkor f/1.4 50mm lens and a Lastolite Tri-grip reflector. Hooray for natural light! I was able to shoot wide open without having to worry about using flash, strobes, or sync speeds. And, with a reflector, all you need to do is ask one of the other people to hold the reflector.

Salt Lake City Passes Nondiscrimination Laws – Day 68 of 365
written by dav.dI am first and foremost a portrait photographer – I photograph people. But I love the idea that I can switch hats and change my job title to landscape photography, sports photographer, and last night? photojournalist. Tuesday night QSaltLake Magazine asked me to photograph the Salt Lake City Council’s historic hearing and vote on the nondiscrimination ordinances regarding GLBT individuals and housing and employment.
This photograph is going to be Wednesday’s cover for QSaltLake Magazine – and I am pumped! I think this is my second cover shot for the magazine. But check out this new edition – it has other photographs I have taken as well.

Salt Lake City Council discusses nondiscrimination ordinances
Tuesday night was truly historic. 10 years ago the SLC City Council voted down similar legislation. Tuesday night was a different story. The vote was unanimous – and the LDS Church had given it’s seal of approval for the new nondiscrimination laws.
Most all of the photographs were taken at ISO 2000 – this way I wouldn’t have to use flash. I didn’t want to be a distraction. I also used a monopod to take the photographs – I wanted as much stability in low light. I had the VR support in my 70-200mm lens and it was wide open at f/2.8 but every little bit helps.

Equality Utah and the Common Ground Dinner
written by dav.dThis was the second year to photograph Equality Utah’s fundraiser dinner. This dinner was focused on the Common Grounds changes that fight for equality of people in respect to jobs, housing and other issues.
Did you know it is legal to fire someone in Utah because they are gay, lesbian or transgender? Did you know that people are evicted just because of who they love? There are basic rights that are denied people everyday – and that has got to stop.

QUAC Car Wash Fundraiser
written by dav.dQUAC (Queer Utah Aquatics Club) is raising money! They are a Utah swim team that has swimming, diving and water polo, they even have the occasional synchronized swimming. And they are planning on going to Cologne, Germany next year for the 2010 Gay Games.
If I ever make it back to the pool I hope I can go as well – I haven’t been to Europe yet and that would be a blast.
