My Dream Lens is Real! – Day 228 of 365

written by dav.d

I finally bought my dream lens. Ok, I admit, I have a lot of dream lenses. However, this one has been at the top of my wish list for a number of years. In fact it is one reason I bought a Canon brand camera (I have been photographing with Nikon for about 5-6 years). And Nikon is unable to or unwilling to make this kind of lens.

I am an aperture snob – give me wide aperture over any other feature including VR or IS. It is the f/1.2 that will create the creamy blurry backgrounds called “bokeh.” I can’t wait to use this on some people. I was playing with this lens at the office and the lens is sharp! Much sharper than my Canon 50mm f/1.2 lens. However, if you have to pick between the 50mm or the 85mm? I would recommend the 50mm since it is more versatile. But for me when I am give an either or choice – I say get both!

And I was expecting to buy this lens next month – for my birthday – however my tax refund showed up earlier than expected so “Happy Monday to me, happy Monday to me, happy Monday dear dav.d, happy Monday to me!”

A Microphone – Day 188 of 365

written by dav.d

This photograph was taken with my new Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens while I am renting my friend’s Canon 5D Mark II. The 85mm f/1.8 is a good lens from just half an hour of photographing and as I put it through the paces I will be comparing that lens to my Canon 50mm f/1.2 lens. Mainly to compare the difference between the aperture. It isn’t a completely fair test since they are different focal lengths – but I think I can see a huge difference between f/1.8 and f/1.2.

Maybe in the next month I will rent the 85mm f/1.2 lens just to see the whole difference. Ultimately it is my goal to upgrade to the 85mm f/1.2. And the more I shoot with these cool Canon lenses the more I am tempted to shelve my Nikons :(

And a night of karaoke is a great way to test out the lens – its dark and the lens with camera is a great way to photograph in the dark.

My New Baby! And it’s a boy! – Day 169 of 365

written by dav.d

I have a new camera – and it is a Canon camera this time. For those that know me I have shot Nikon for about 6 years? (Damn I am old!) And I will continue to photograph with Nikon. I am not switching I am going to shoot both. Or as I like to joke – I am going to swing both ways.

Nikon could not or would not create 3 lenses that Canon has been making for quite sometime. I love shooting wide open apertures and Canon has the wides aperture lenses: 85mm f/1.2, 50mm f/1.2, and 24mm f/1.4. So Today I bought the Canon 50mm f/1.2 and Canon 5D Mark II. I also bought the Canon 580ex II flash – because I need a flash for the camera. Although to properly do off camera flash I will be needing a second Canon flash.

So I will be saving my nickels and dimes again for the 24mm and the 85mm lenses. In the mean time I will be living in the 50mm f/1.2. Woo hoo!

I think I need a practice photo shoot.
