Utah Arts Festival – Day 297 of 365

written by dav.d

I finally made it to the Utah Arts Festival! I have never been and I almost didn’t make it. This weekend has been pretty busy with photo editing, World Cup Soccer disappointments, second shooting a wedding in Park City on Sunday. However, I made it!

I was there for a few hours and checked out the various artist’s booths. These artists travel to a number of art festivals – apparently there are no local Utah artists? I paid more attention to the photographers’ work. A lot of landscape – and some really, really, like the saturation dialog box in Photoshop.

And the one thing I was excited about was trying some of the food items. I know, I know, I am picking up my diet and exercise again on Monday. I don’t want to buy fat pants.

Walk MS Salt Lake City – Day 233 of 365

written by dav.d

Photowalking Utah helped photograph the Walk MS in Salt Lake City on Saturday. A TON of people showed up to walk and raise money for the battle against MS (multiple sclerosis). And we had a number of photographers there to help cover the event. And now I am nursing the blisters on my heals (I think I wore the wrong socks). But it was worth it.

I have a full gallery of photos available on SmugMug and for this event I have posted them on my flickr.

Event photography is all about being everywhere and anywhere to get the shot – while trying to be a ninja and stay out of the way of other photographers and the general public. And you gotta capture the key moments – like cutting the ribbon to begin the walk.

Walk MS Salt Lake City

Walk MS Salt Lake City

And of course I always like to snap a few shots of the other photographers. I used my new lens for the whole event – I don’t think I will ever remove the Canon 85mm f/1.2 from the camera – that lens is absolutely amazing.

Walk MS Salt Lake City

Walk MS Salt Lake City

Maybe the blisters showed up because I kept running in front of the walk or at least tried to get close to the front so I can photograph the walkers from the front. We didn’t need a bunch of “butt shots” – apparently in years past the photographers would just photograph what was in front of them and hence a lot of people from behind. So I did my best to capture people from the front – where their faces are. That is a challenge cause you have to run a lot and when you walk you walk backwards to get the shot.

And it was fun to see whole families walking, running, and riding bicycles together. Balloons and pinwheels where everywhere!

And some people decided to take a nap half way through the walk – lazy lazy lazy. Fortunately they had a mom or dad to carry them.

Valentine’s Day is also known as Single Person Awareness Day – and for both single and coupled people Bonche Management hosted a party at Club Jam called “LoveFest 2010.” Bonche Management wanted a ton of details photographs taken of the party. They will be working to organize parties and other events and of course quality photography really helps. Why they picked me I have no clue!

But it was a great chance for me to practice some food photography. True food photography is a science that I have never tried to master. Maybe someday when I have more time to cook and light the food properly. Most of these shots were taken with a flash on the camera bounced off walls to try and create side lighting. Sometimes it works – other times you find the delete button as fast as you can!

For most my food photography I used the Tamron 28-75mm lens, the Nikkor 50mm lens and even my macro lens. If I was to do proper food photography I can see myself using the macro lens and my 70-200mm lens but with my big softboxes or maybe a natural light studio.

And as a surprise to the guests there was a performance company with drums and 2 chinese dragons. It was really a cool experience. Afterward I checked the temperature of my flash and it was rather toasty. But I got a number of good shots – these two were my favorite. Really beautiful costumes. And with this as the Chinese New Year rather appropriate!

Club Jam Host Fundraiser for Documentary on Proposition 8

written by dav.d

Club Jam hosted a private party to help raise money for the 8: The Mormon Proposition documentary. It is expensive to create a movie and they are trying to raise $50,000 to finish the sound, color correction and other edits to make the movie complete.

These photographs are more of the “detail shots” of Club Jam. I have photographed there so often as of late I thought I have captured all that could be photographed. But there is always something or someone new to photograph. Here is a link to the SmugMug gallery with all the photographs.

And I love this first photograph – I just noticed the reflection on the balloons. I really need to be more observant. I usually don’t look for reflections.

Friday the 13th Private Party at Club Jam

written by dav.d

Club Jam host a costume party on Friday. Being Friday the 13th there was little in the way of scary costumes ironically but then no one really dresses up as a scary outfit once they get to high school. Everyone dresses as something sexy. Sexy nurse, sexy cat, sexy swimsuit, or sexy zombie.

Check out the full gallery of photographs on SmugMug.

Bud Boys Visit Club Jam

written by dav.d

Bud Light Golden Wheat was the beer du jour at Club Jam Friday night. And the Bud Boys were there for eyecandy and help promote the the beer. From what I understand it was Club Jam that was able to find these Bud Boys a few months ago in a contest. I could be wrong but if not that is pretty cool. Apparently Bud Girls were not as popular at a gay club as Bud Boys – so it makes sense.

See the full gallery of photos at my SmugMug gallery.  And of course the photos are for sale – they help support me as a photographer and help me make even better photographs.

I am not a beer drinker myself – but at least I know how to photograph beer and people who drink beer.  I am a pretty good people photographer – and people make the product look better. So if you are ever advertising a product be sure to find some hottie models to show off your products.

And you can’t promote beer without swag – in this case Bud Light Golden Wheat buttons and Bud Light Golden Wheat beaded necklaces. Everything was very orange – it is all about branding, man!

After the party some of the Bud Boys switched hats and became underwear models. This was a popular moment at the club – and the guys showed off why they were selected as Bud Boys. And if I can look like that drinking Bud Light? Bring it on!

It was fun coaching the models on how to pose with everyone gathering around and watching. Remember, everything I learned from modeling is from Tyra Banks and America’s Next Top Model. My best suggestion is to relax – and be yourself for the camera.

The old Bud Light might be history. Especially since their marketing campaign is “drinkability.” Just a personal commentary on using the word “drinkability” – that sounds like Bud Light is good enough that you won’t vomit it up – because it is drinkable. It doesn’t sound appealing at all!

Club Jam celebrated their first year anniversary Saturday night. They had drinks, cake, even a balloon drop at midnight that included balloons, condoms, and cash. Who doesn’t like a money drop at midnight, lol. You can check all the photographs at my SmugMug gallery.

No party is complete without balloons

I think that I have mastered the art of event photography. Gotta learn to bounce the flash or as I used last night – a cable to get the flash off the camera completely. I could then hold the flash about 3 feet to my left to get the images to have more dimension. To often if you use leave the flash on the camera it’ll light your subject but it will flatten the image.

Another thing that helps event photographs is a high ISO and a slow sync speed. But most important? A good lens with at least f/2.8 aperture. This whole event was shot with my Tamron f/2.8 28-75mm lens. It works pretty well.
