David Daniels, BYU Graduate & BYU Fan

written by dav.d

There has been a lot of discussion this week about BYU t-shirts and BYU jackets. Yes, I am the photographer who wore a BYU jacket to the interview with Senator Chris Buttar’s interview with Reed Cowan. Why? Because I am a BYU graduate and I am a HUGE BYU fan – but I am working out and dieting. I am a true blue BYU fan.

Here is a photograph of me in December 2007 wearing the now infamous BYU Jacket. It is a very handsome jacket – I even bought it on sale so I could wear it to the Las Vegas Bowl game where BYU beat UCLA when they blocked a last second kick.

I wish the discussion would be more on the film itself. Senator Chris Buttars said what he said – with no deception and no coercion. I don’t think we really needed to ask Chris Buttars many questions because he was very good at talking and talking and talking.

I would encourage everyone to see 8: The Mormon Proposition if and when it comes to a theater near you. I saw the movie last Sunday and I cried. I cried for the people who have committed suicide for being gay. I cried for the people who were subjected to electroshock therapy for being gay. I cried for the youth who are homeless because they were kicked out of their family’s home for being gay.

Below is a photograph I took of 3 gay youth featured in 8: The Mormon Proposition. They are showing a “squat” – an abandoned building or basement where they can shelter themselves from the freezing winter nights in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. I have learned that the day after this photograph was taken the youth in the glasses – in the middle – was brutally beaten with a metal pipe to the head while people called him “faggot.” He almost died and was in intensive care and is still recovering. That hate crime was never reported.

I am the oldest of 7 children. I am gay. I have a gay brother. I served an honorable mission to Puerto Rico from 1992-94. I returned and married my best friend – and even though the marriage didn’t last my friendship with her still does. I don’t feel welcome in the LDS (Mormon) church and so I don’t attend.

Hate crimes, discrimination in marriage, employment, housing, health benefits, and even homelessness are things that are destructive. I cannot idly sit on the sidelines and ignore the injustice and inequality.

I am gay. I am a BYU graduate. I vote. I photograph so that I will tell the story of the GLBT community through my photographs. I am a child of God.

Henry roots for BYU – Day 86 of 365

written by dav.d

My family bleeds blue – let me be clear – we are BYU through and through. And we are born loving BYU. Here is Henry my nephew – granted he was more interested in the chips, soda, and candy than in the turn overs, touchdowns, and overtime game. And although I talk a lot of trash during the BYU vs. Utah game – I don’t have that much hate in my heart. Some of my best friends are Utes.

BYU vs Air Force – Day 79 of 365

written by dav.d

My family invaded Lavell Edwards Stadium to watch BYU play Air Force Academy. BYU hasn’t been doing very well playing at home – but they did win this game. Next week? BYU will play Utah at home – I don’t have tickets to that game but will be watching it in HD with the family.

It is that time of year again and my family was able to secure about 4 tickets to 4 different home games for BYU football. I would love to be a sports photographer down on the side line, however, sports photography is EXPENSIVE and I don’t think the return on investment is that great for photographers. To be in that league I would need at least the Nikkor f/4 200-400mm lens and another camera body or two. And to sweeten the deal I would probably need a 500mm or a 600mm lens.

Would I object if Santa Claus left that under the Christmas tree? No. Will it happen? I doubt it. But it would be fun.

And can you imagine photographing portraits with a 200-400mm lens? Dang that would be cool.

BYU Hat – Day 22 of 365

Side light gives a huge dimension to a subject

Side light gives a huge dimension to a subject

For the record my family’s blood bleed BYU blue. And so I photographed my BYU baseball hat. To make the image pop I lit the logo from the side with an Nikon SB-800. Once I put a my macro lens on my camera it is very difficult to remove. It takes very sharp photographs. Even though it can spend a long time trying to lock focus on subjects.

BYU Football – and a camera phone

written by dav.d

If you don’t know I am a BYU Cougar – I graduated in psychology of all things.  Some of my earliest memories involve visiting Brigham Young University.  My parents met at BYU and my dad proposed to my mom at the stadium.  Watching TV I cheered BYU to their national championship when my family was stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines.  So yes – I bleed blue.

Saturday my dad and my sister Marianne went to the BYU football game and we had a great time watching our beloved Cougars spank UCLA 59-0.  I really wanted to take my good camera – a Nikon D300 – to the game.  I wasn’t sure if such cameras are allowed so I figured I can take a picture with my camera phone.

So here is a picture that I will treasure – cause it will remind me of the game.  But I also look at it and think that it takes equipment and talent to take good pictures.

 BYU Football

This photo has been put through Photoshop to enhance the color and saturation.  So I was able to salvage the photo a little bit.  The next time I go to a BYU game I will bring my real camera – they apparently forbid video cameras but not still cameras.

There is always a constant debate among photographers whether skill or equipment defines the photographer.  Would it make any difference if William Shakespeare had to use a crayon to write Hamlet? Would anyone be able to take amazing photos if we just handed them a Hasselblad?

It really is a moot argument – it takes both skill and equipment.  There is a reason sport photographers use a camera that can shoot 8 frames a second and a lens that retails for $6,000.  They won’t be using a camera phone to take Sports Illustrated photos. However, a photographer is only as good as the camera he or she has with them.

Anywho, just wanted to rant a little – and I wanted to celebrate BYU winning.

The Bush Children Portraits

written by dav.d

Here are some awesome portraits of my nephew and nieces in Orem. Introducing Maren, Julianne and Henry! They are awesome – each has their unique personality and it was fun photographing them. These are photos from the first half of the photo shoot. We photographed on the campus of Brigham Young University in a little garden spot with pond.

It is a challenge photographing children – they move fast and they don’t hold still. And we had them climbing the rock water fall and posing in different locations. In a later blog post I will show off the photos we took from a local playground.

You will also notice that I have added a background and logo – I wanted to add some branding to the blog photos to help market myself. Let me know what you think of the branding – is it over the top? not enough? cool? weird?

BYU Las Vegas Bowl

written by dav.d

BYU Las Vegas Bowl, originally uploaded by dav.d.

My family was lucky to get tickets to the 2006 Las Vegas Bowl to watch our favorite team – the BYU Cougars. And we were very lucky to get end zone seats on row 5.

That gave me the perfect location to snap this photo and it looks so cool because the panning and the low shutter speed creates a beautiful motion blur that helps isolate the coach and 4 players escorting the team flag to the field.
