I’m am one day away from completing my 365 Project. Woo hoo!

Today I started collecting some antique film cameras. I found the Polaroid Land Camera 800, the Keystone Pathfinder K-29 8mm video camera, and a Brownie Junior SIX-20. I also found a few cameras on eBay. I don’t think I will ever try to get these cameras workable, they are going to be props or decorations on my desk. Woo hoo!

Editing photos today and I ran across a very cool photograph that I love. This was in the garden and the light was perfect! Golden light bathed the statue from the right side of the camera. I couldn’t fake the light with strobes… sometimes natural light just wins out.

Film Photography Extravaganza!

I received my two rolls of film back from Allen’s Camera. The prints looks amazing. The digital scans look good – but I think they could have been better. They are about 6 megpixel scans and I am not sure what is film grain and what is the low resolution. So I think if I make prints from my film photography I will have them make the prints from the negatives themselves. This is unless I find a higher quality scanning service. I can probably try out a few places. However, I might just be spoiled from the quality attained by digital photography. And film photography gets a lot of charm from the fact it isn’t as perfect as digital, that film gets character from the negative, the grain, the paper, and more.

Anyway, check out these images – these were some of my favorites. These were shot with my Nikon FE and the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 Series E lens. I have a new manual focus lens that I will be testing out and I am excited to see the results from the next roll of film.

Another benefit, and I could be wrong, is that film does have a higher dynamic range compared to digital – at least for now. That could change and I could be wrong. But either way film does have a certain look that can only be imitated with digital.

I bought a “new” lens! This is the Nikkor-P f/2.5 105mm Manual Focus Lens and it works on my film camera. I am sure it would work on my Nikon digital cameras as well but I don’t see a reason to attach it to those cameras. I have been jumping on the trendy bandwagon of rediscovering film photography. Or in my case, I am discovering film photography for the first time. As I write this blog post I am waiting for some film to be developed and scanned to a disk. I will share those once they are ready. If they turn out well and if my next roll of film, shot with the Nikkor 105mm lens, turns out then I may try a practice photo shoot using nothing but my film camera.

Bumble bees and spiders – such cuddly creatures! I was wondering what I would be photographing today and when I stopped by my sister’s house there were some gorgeous flowers outside, however, it was the insects on the flowers that became the story. Now, I did crop these quite a bit – I didn’t want to get too close. And the spider is extremely small!

So it helps to have a 100mm macro lens and a 21 megapixel camera so I have plenty of room to crop the photo to feature the spider and the bumble bee. And then I had to show my nephew and nieces where I saw the insects – they wanted to check out the bees.

Breakfast on camping trips is one of those things that can be magic or tragic. You want to eat and you hope everything turns out. Rarely have I seen pancakes work on a camping trip. Good thing we were in cabins and had access to a kitchen with a Ye Olde Stove. Now I need to get my film processed. Woo hoo!

I did create an HDR version of this photograph and it didn’t improve the photograph at all. So sometimes it is best to go with the original.

Here are a few photographs in HDR and as regular exposures. We found some abandoned cabins in one location and then the Park Services have restored another cabin.

The first two photos are High Dynamic Range photos of the same cabin – one is an exterior photograph and one is the interior photograph.

I was camping this weekend and I took a lot of photos. A lot of those photos were taken with my film camera – just for the fun of it. However, I did use my Canon camera and I created a few HDR photographs. I am back to using Photomatix Pro although I am lusting after Nik Software’s recently announced HDR Efex Pro software. This photo was then edited back in Adobe Lightroom. The sunset was just gorgeous and I am happy I could capture this (handheld).
