Hailey & Kennedy – Day 328 of 365

written by dav.d

My department at my day job had a picnic at Canyon Glen up Provo Canyon. It was a dutch oven style luncheon – more photos will be posted of the food. In the mean time here is a photographed I took of Hailey and Kennedy. If you are a photographer, always take cool photos of the boss’s daughters and you gain brownie points.

To create this photograph I used my Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS Macro lens. I am using an off camera flash – the Canon 580ex II is on a light stand to camera right. It is being shot through a Honl Traveler 8 softbox. Camera settings: f/5.6, 1/200s, ISO 100, 100mm.

I absolutely love photographing on the Bonneville Salt Flats (I have been calling them the Utah Salt Flats for the longest time – oh well). And today I had the chance to photograph 3 people – two of them shirtless. The one female model didn’t want to go topless, go figure. lol

Anyway, I was nervous the rain would show up and make things impossible. However, the rain stayed away for the most part and only showed up as we were packing. So we got some amazing clouds and light and of course I had my big studio lights on hand. This is one preview photo of Jacob Whipple. He will be moving to North Carolina next month and we had to get to the Salt Flats before he left.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to photograph Jon Jepsen for headshots and photos he can use for his insurance business. Headshots are critical in the service industry because people want to know who they are dealing with. Realtors, insurance agents, sales people and more are selling themselves more than they are selling their products.

And when Jon needed updated headshots he contacted me again – and I made it a challenge to create better photographs compared to his last photo shoot. It is my goal to improve my photography and I want these portraits to knock the socks off of the ones from several years ago. Here is a link to the other photographs. I will be working on editing the photos from today and I will have a bigger blog post once the photos are done. Woo hoo!

Check out my wedding photography on my dav.d wedding photography website. I have a seperate website because brides want to see a website with nothing but bridal photographs, wedding photographs and related photographs. Why am I posting a bridal photograph for my photo of the day project on my portrait site? Because I didn’t take another photo today and so I figured it would give me an excuse to link people over to the wedding site.

And, I was second shooter/assistant for this bridal photo shoot. This is Emily and we photographer her downtown Provo and this is at the Utah County Courthouse. This photograph is also straight out of the camera – I am getting pretty good that what comes out of the camera is ready for sharing to the world.

To quote Martha Stewart, “It’s a good thing.”

Models of the Off Camera Lighting Clinic

written by dav.d

Here are some of my favorite photos from a recent photowalk with other photographers. We all got together to practice and learn some off camera lighting technique. And I had the chance to share everything I know about off camera, or strobist, lighting techniques. I even let other photographers try out some of my gear. The nice thing about photographing Nikon and Canon is I can let other people try out the gear and I can answer questions for both brands of camera. I don’t know everything but I do know a lot. I just need practice.

If you were a model at the event you are welcome to go to the SmugMug page and download your images and use them however you want – no charge. Thank you for donating your time! If you see a photo where you would like some retouching let me know and I can do that – things have been nuts so a lot of these images (most the images) are straight out of the camera with no edits.

These are some photos that were taken by me and by my good friend Nicolesy. They are behind the scene photos of Rich Legg’s courtroom themed photo shoot for his stock photography. Rich is an exclusive photographer for iStockPhoto.com and he is a full time stock photographer.

The first photograph is a panorama I created in Adobe Photoshop CS5. This thing took FOREVER for Photoshop to stitch together. In the shot you can see that Rich is using about 6 strobe lights. I think there were up to 10 lights set up and available for the photo shoot. Most of them are set up as optical slaves and one of them was set up with a Pocketwizard to trigger the lights.

And a number of photographers were volunteer models for this photo shoot. The orange prison jumper actually comes with a warning that you might be arrested and treated as a felon if you wear this costume outside.

And the other model had some amazing makeup applied to make it look like a black eye. It looked wickedly good – nice and real. These photo shoots can be a lot of fun, especially when make up is involved.

And for everyone who appears in the photo shoot there has to be a model release. You cannot use a person’s likeness in advertising without a model release – you can get your wallet taken from you in court if you do.

My role was to play a lawyer. I broke out one of my suits and put my hair in a very conservative hairstyle. My mom would have been proud and Rich Legg didn’t recognize me! He was about to introduce himself to me and then he realized who I was. It was a lot of fun. Although next time I will try to reign in my humor. I had some photos that needed me to be serious and I would say something funny and everyone would laugh (or blush).

Stock photography is a really challenging and potentially rewarding career. I am an iStockPhotographer although I have only uploaded 4 images about 4 years ago. I have played with the idea of getting into stock photography – if only as a way to challenge myself. I would create a photo submit it and then potentially have my image accepted or rejected. Sort of similar to portrait and wedding photography but on a much more intense level.

Fun With Floods – Day 314 of 365

written by dav.d

Once a week my sister’s property gets irrigated – and the lawn is flooded with water. This is apparently what they use to due before sprinklers. How quaint.

Anywho, this also means that there is a cheap alternative to a water and my nephew and nieces can go rafting in the lawn. My dad provided some rafts, innertubes, and some ropes to pull the kids around. They had a lot of fun and it was a chance to try out my recently repaired Nikon lens. So far the lens is working, I am crossing my fingers that this fourth repair lasts! Shooting with my Nikon camera brings back a lot of memories. And I am reminded with how good Nikon’s autofocus system really kicks butt.

I should zoom into the photo so you could see the sad sad face of Henry. He was asked to push his Uncle Adam on the raft and Henry was just too sad. He wanted to ride the ride. :(

DJ Mike Babbit – Day 311 of 365

written by dav.d

Mike Babbit, was the DJ for Bonche Management’s pool party on Sunday – and the music was great! I will be posting more photos from the party, however, I am going to take a day or so to get the photos sorted and edited down.

Mike Babbit also DJs regularly at Jam – usually on Saturdays. So check out Jam! And watch for more Bonche Management events in the future – I wouldn’t be surprised if it is Mike spinning the beats.
