I bought an iPhone 4 this morning, hooray! This phone is amazing. I was upgrading from the iPhone 3G so it was a bigger jump in technology since I skipped a generation of iPhone. I was able to reserve an iPhone the day they went on sale and I am glad I did.

I decided I liked the idea of sleep so I woke up at 3am and arrived at the Gateway at 4:30am. At about 5am they moved all the people who had reservations to their own line – and boy it was nice to jump in front of 80% of people in line.

We then waited for about 2 hours till the store opened. One guy cooked breakfast, Apple employees dropped off donuts, and I even got a t-shirt from Appigo because I use one of their products (To Do – great to do list app).

I walked out of the store at 8am – so yay! And my review for the iPhone 4 is 10,000,000 thumbs up.

Grand Marshal Party for Utah Pride 2010

written by dav.d

Utah Pride kicked off the weekend with the Grand Marshal Reception at the Jewish Community Center overlooking the University of Utah. Sister Dottie S. Dixon (played by Charles Lynn Frost) is this year’s grand marshal. She is the mother of a gay son and hails from Spanish Fark, Utah.

The party was great and I took a TON of photos. Check them out on my SmugMug.

This Pride is going to be off the hook – I hope people come out and see all the hard work and the great fun and entertainment that has been planned and organized. My job is easy – I just point my camera and push the shutter. Easy as pie.

Today was the 2010 graduation for the University of Utah Law School and I had the opportunity to photograph again this year. I was able to photograph last year and took some amazing photos and so I felt the challenge to take even better photos this year. And this year the event went sooo quickly but I think I did a pretty good job taking amazing photos once again.

To see the full gallery of photographs check my SmugMug gallery. Prints and digital downloads are available for purchase.

And this year is unique because I was photographing with Canon gear this year – last year I used all my Nikon equipment. With my Nikon 70-200mm lens in the shop for now for repairs I am renting the Canon 70-200mm lens and it works great. I rare used flash – when I did it was for some fill flash.

Photographing these events can be a challenge because it is so dark in the Kingsbury Hall – the image stabilization worked very well and helped get some sharp shots. And the higher ISO helps as well. And what I like about the Canon system is the ability to switch settings using a knob to jump between C1, C2, and C3. I can change the white balance, ISO, aperture, and even shutter speed with one knob. To bad Nikon doesn’t have something like that.

I won an award! I would like to thank God and steroids for this moment… and it isn’t the camera that makes the photographer it is the community that I am able to support.

QSaltLake Magazine hosted their Fabby Awards on Wednesday and I won the Fabby for Best Shutterbug. I even have a plaque that I can put on the wall. And I want to thank everyone who voted for me – it is an honor and really cool.

Selling My Nikon Gear

written by dav.d

I have had a change of heart – I was going through my equipment and realizing that some of the Nikon gear that I own is just amazing and I am stupid to give it up.  And so I am going to continue using both Nikon and Canon gear.  I want to enjoy the best of both camera systems even if that means I have to buy 2 camera bags to hold things.
