My day job is a web designer for Nu Skin. I have been working there for 10 years as of July 11th. It is surreal to think that it has already been 10 years! I was 27 at the time – and now I am so old! However, I still have somewhat of a youthful look since I use Nu Skin products daily. I haven’t bought a bottle of shampoo in those ten years. As a benefit to employees we get a certain allotment of points to use on products from the company. I know it works as long as I look younger than my brothers (I am the oldest of 7 kids – 5 of them are boys).

As recognition of 10 years of work Nu Skin gives employees a pin – as you see below. We also get a very generous bonus! Woo hoo! It really is a great company to work for with great benefits, bonuses and products. And I like/tolerate my co-workers ;)

With my bonus I will be buying a macro lens for my Canon 5D Mark II. The Nu Skin pin above was photographed with my 50mm f/1.2 lens – and it is cropped because that is as close as I can get with my Canon lenses. To get any closer will require a macro lens. So hooray! I will be purchasing the Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS lens. I have rented that lens before and it works great. And this way, I won’t always have to carry my Nikon camera and lenses just to shoot macro.

Here is the original photograph below – you can definitely see why I need a macro. Mmmmmmm, macro!

If you follow me on Twitter you would know I love my new iPhone 4. And I stood in line for hours early in the morning. Well, I was on TV for about a second enjoying sausage. You can see the video clip on ABC 4′s website. I have 1 second of my 15 minutes of fame!

Here is a screenshot from the web video.

Baby Geese at Liberty Park Before the Oil Spill

written by dav.d

You never know when your photography will take on a whole new meaning. On Friday June 11th, 2010 there was an oil spill that leaked into Red Butte Creek and then found its way into the Liberty Park pond. Two days before, on Wednesday, I was there photographing the Canadian Geese and the ducks. So when I saw the news report covering Chevron’s oil spill it sort of hit home.

And this morning on Fox 13 they reported that about 4 of the baby geese that were living in the pond had died from the oil. These are photos I hadn’t published till now. Hopefully they will act as a mini-memorial to nature and the responsibility we have to care for the earth.

I feel guilty driving a car that uses gasoline. I even commute to Provo 4 days a week to work – so in many respects I feel like I am partly responsible. It is easier to keep the earth clean rather than try and clean it. What can we do in our own lives to conserve?

New Policy/Rant on Copyright

written by dav.d

In the past month I have seen my images all over the internet with my giant watermark. I don’t want to be a douche nozzle and mean – but I want some support from the community at large on respecting my copyright and to pony up and send me some dinero if they chose to use my photographs in their Facebook, blogs, newpapers, and such.

Here is my page on copyright.

And if you see a watermark outside of SmugMug with this kind of watermark – someone is being a meany pants. And remember if you buy photographs you help me invest in newer, better, and shinier camera equipment that will help me take more awesome photographs. It’s a win-win.

Shoebox Accounting Ends in 2009 – Day 147 of 365

written by dav.d

Here is a snapshot of my shoebox accounting method from 2008 & 2009. I am working to file my Sales & Use Tax for 2009. Since my photography business is still small I only have to file by January 31st. And after I work with an accountant on filing my federal taxes I will be saying adios to my shoebox accounting method. I gotta be more digital – gotta be more organized. So I am learning Quickbooks – and have been using it since the New Year began.

Cause this? Ain’t organzied!

Old, dead hard drives

written by dav.d

Just a friendly reminder to back up your data! I had a hard drive fail a few months ago – and since it was part of a Drobo raid I just replaced the drive and no data was lost. I have also had a few Western Digital external hard drives fail – I won’t use them again – and that is why I use the Drobo. And I got rid of several old computers but I always keep the hard drives.

I always consider old hard drives as a potential security risk. If you give away old computers and old hard drives you risk people finding account numbers, passwords, emails and more. So next to my desk I have these hard drives stacked. There are more than 4.1 terabytes of old storage there. So back up!
