Club Jam celebrated their first year anniversary Saturday night. They had drinks, cake, even a balloon drop at midnight that included balloons, condoms, and cash. Who doesn’t like a money drop at midnight, lol. You can check all the photographs at my SmugMug gallery.

I think that I have mastered the art of event photography. Gotta learn to bounce the flash or as I used last night – a cable to get the flash off the camera completely. I could then hold the flash about 3 feet to my left to get the images to have more dimension. To often if you use leave the flash on the camera it’ll light your subject but it will flatten the image.

Another thing that helps event photographs is a high ISO and a slow sync speed. But most important? A good lens with at least f/2.8 aperture. This whole event was shot with my Tamron f/2.8 28-75mm lens. It works pretty well.

Black & White Jean Model Photography

Let's get political in photography

Let's get political in photography

I love practice photoshoots. We can spend a lot of time all over the place and just have fun. My friend Brian Gordon and I wanted to go find some cool locations outside of the Salt Lake valley. We also wanted to photograph with some studio strobes outside. So we asked Wes if he wanted to be our model and he said sure. We had photographed with Wes about a year ago.

All of these photos were edited in Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro. Wes had just sunburned and didn’t want “lobster red skin” in the photographs. One way to fix it is the obvious way – turn all photos black and white.

We were going to the town of Eureka, Utah – but along the way we took numerous detours. We stopped by some mines in Santaquin. We were just exploring and I didn’t bring the lights along and should have – even though it was quite the hike up the side of a hill/mountain. Apparently these mines were featured in the movie “Bats.”

With the abandoned mine it really looks like some war torn location. I haven’t been to Bosnia but it seems like this is what Bosnian fashion photography would look like. I think it would be awesome to be a fashion photographer. Granted there is soooo much more that goes into fashion photography than I am currently prepared for. I would have to upgrade to Hasselblad (a 20,000-60,000 investment). I would need a team of make up artists and stylists.

So baby steps.

And I don’t know if most models would want to climb around mines or hills like this.

It was at this gas station at Elberta, Utah where a car passed by about 5 times – each time they were yelling gay slurs and driving off. It is weird to think that doesn’t happen in Salt Lake – at least not to me. I guess small town are just…

When we arrived to Eureka, the sun was setting quickly, and the rain was starting to come down so we didn’t have a lot of time.
