Lighting with Alien Bee and a Nikon Speedlight
I just wrapped up a practice photo session with Heidi and Alma. They are a husband and wife photography team and really fun. We met at a recent photo editing competition and we set up the practice session.
In about two hours I taught them everything I know about studio lighting outside. I taught them about my Alien Bees studio strobes and I also taught them about the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS)

It is pretty cool to see the difference between each of the systems. Alien Bees have power and access to a lot of modifiers such as softboxes, beauty dishes, snoots and more.
The Nikon CLS is able to photograph at a sync speed of 1/8000th of a second – so you can photograph at apertures of f/1.4 in daylight – you can’t get that aperture with Alien Bees in day light.
And one last photograph with nothing but natural light. Granted if we wanted pure natural light we would have to hunt for it. But I wanted to show the difference between “artifical lights” and “natural lights.”
