Last week I and another photographer hooked up to rock out an epic photo shoot. We had 3 models and only 7 hours and 4 locations stretching from Provo to Elberta to Eureka. For a while we have wanted to have a photo shoot down in Eureka – it is a semi-abandoned town.

Grey was one of the models – he only had an hour so we stayed in Provo for his photo shoot. This shoot was located on Geneva Road in Provo.

This photo shoot was a chance to do some major practice with a softbox on location – it is a challenge – but it is so worth it. And I wanted to teach Brian all my tricks of the trade using a softbox. And it was my chance to introduce him to the world of Alien Bee lighting equipment

The day started with clear skies – and half way through the shoot the clouds came in and we worked with it. There were some rain drops but we were pretty lucky. I just had to protect the flashes and camera equipment – no photographer wants that damaged by water.

A very old build, abandoned, makes an awesome backdrop.

I love Adobe Lightroom – I can edit a photo entirely in Lightroom – but it really is meant to get the basics of the image right – you can get all the detail you can into the photo before you take the photo into Adobe Photoshop. I was able to bring in the details of the clouds back – there was not a lot of detail there – one of the benefits shooting in raw is the ability to bring in detail that JPG just discards. Holy cow that was a run on sentence.

I also got to play with Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro – if I am in a hurry I usually run one of my photoshop actions that turns the image to black and white. The Silver Efex plugin lets me create a custom black and white effect with control over everything.

Great shots, Dav.d! There is something absolutely captivating about #5 — bringing the detail out in the clouds definitely plays into that.

These are so fun! Do you mind me asking where exactly this is on Geneva Rd? I would love to shoot here!

    Thanks!
