HDR Tutorial Featuring Moab

written by dav.d

Why bother with HDR? A camera can only see so much of the world with one photo. Imagine we take 9 photos and turn them into one uber good photo. It is a bit challenging. It take some planning and some software but you can do it. I am going to show how I do it. Is it the right way? Probably not. But it works well for me.

Here is a comparison of one photo to an HDR photo.

So what do you need? A camera that can shoot in manual mode.  A tripod.  Those are the two basics.  You can’t hand hold for HDR.

On the Streets of Moab in HDR

written by dav.d

I really love photographing in HDR. It is an involved process but the results are really cool. I am trying to write up a blog post where I detail the steps I take to create an HDR image. If life and time co-operate it will be ready in a week.

In the meantime here are a few photos of the streets of Moab. I had some free time to walk around and look for subjects. I love the 3rd photo of the old motor home with the satellite dish and air conditioner attached. It just screams class.

Moab & Friends

written by dav.d

For the most part everytime I create an HDR image I am using 9 bracketed photos to do so. You can, using Photomatix Pro, create an HDR from one RAW file. It isn’t ideal – the more information you give the software the more details the software can pour into your image.

The following photo was created from one RAW/DNG photo. I had to do some noise removal in the shadow areas – but it is still a rather fun photo.

Photo of friends under the delicate arch

Standing under the Delicate Arch is a story unto itself. There is literally a line and people get upset if you take to long under the arch. I would suggest that people standing in line don’t stand so close to the side of the arch. I had to crop this photo to cut out people. Another photo I will try to clone out some people. But oh well.

Moab Preview

written by dav.d

This past weekend I was in Moab with friends. I brought my new tripod and I took a ton of photos that will become HDR images. Thank goodness Photomatix Pro has a batch process feature. Over night I was able to turn 819 photos into 91 HDR images.

Photomatix Pro is just the first step. I then edit the resulting TIFF image in Lightroom and then in Adobe Photoshop. I improve the contrast, saturation and remove any dust spots. In the case of Moab I am going to be de-people-ifying the photos.

Before & After HDR

written by dav.d

I am tempted to practice with my Nikon D90 and bracket with bracketed photos rather than the nine bracket photos of the D300.

If anyone wants to go on a photo safari sometime – let me know. We can break out the tripods.

So here is another HDR example of before and after.
