There are debates that will never end. Coke vs Pepsi. Ford vs. Chevy. And every single sports rivalry. Do any of them really matter? Does anyone even care? Short answer is no. Long answer is no.
So what does this have to do with a lens hood? Why should you use a lens hood? And what is the controversy?
For several years I used UV filters on my lenses. Not to keep out UV light – but to protect the lens and the glass. These lenses are expensive and the argument is – if you have a cheap UV filter break it is a lot cheaper than the front glass of your lens breaking.
Makes sense. However, if you spend 400 or 2000 dollars for a lens. And then you place a cheap 10 dollar UV filter in front of that lens – what the “bleep”? So much for the quality glass, nano crystal technology, L series glass or whatever else because you now have cheap glass (or plastic) in the way of a perfect photo.
How do I protect my lenses? Lens hoods. They are designed to reduce lighting flares. But they really help protect a lens from bumps and breaks. Use them instead of a UV filter.
