dav.d with camera

written by dav.d

As promised, photos of me with my camera.  And I like these because the tell more of a story than me just standing around looking cool hip and groovy.  But that is just me.  If you ever want photos one of the first questions I will ask:

Do you have a hobby or activity that you would like to feature in your photo shoot?

Why is this important? It helps tell a bigger story.

Oh, and a special thanks to Brian Gordon for his photos and especially for letting me retouch them.

dav.d sans camera

written by dav.d

Finally! I have some photos of me to post!

These photos come from the talented hands of Brian Gordon.  He was kind enough to let me add my brand of retouching to fancy them up.  I really went to the black and white and aged photo look.  This group of photos is of me sans camera.  I will post photos soon that have me holding the camera.

International Rescue Committee – Give Thanks Dinner

written by dav.d

If I never make a dime as a photographer I will be all to happy to donate my time to worthwhile causes such at the International Rescue Committee. This organization helps around the world with everything from providing food, clean drinking water and even helping refugees relocate.

This dinner helped recognize families that had relocated to the United States – Utah more specifically. There were people from the middle east, Asia, South America and other locations. The entertainment included dancers from Rwanda and Burundi.

It was my honor to try and capture the tender moments and the breaking of bread in thanks.

Wes – Model Extraordinaire

written by dav.d

What photo safari would be complete without a model with fierce attitude?  We found a cool new location (new for me) and we had two photographers for this model.

It is a lot of fun when you are just there to have fun with photography.  So often you are worried about what shot is next.  On these photo safari’s you get the chance to try new ideas in a much more relaxed environment.

So here are some of Wes’ photos:

Brian Gordon – Ace Photographer

written by dav.d

Remember when I mentioned that most photographers hate to have their photo taken? Well, there are a few photographers that do like to have their picture taken.  Recently I went on a photo safari of the Provo Castle (behind the psycho people hospital).  We had two photographers and a model and a pair of studio lights.

The goal was to practice with Brian’s new studio lights.  I will say this about his lights – I love my Alien Bees even more than ever.  But it was good to practice with them – practice sessions are always a good thing.  And with good weather and a sunday afternoon we were able to get some nice photos for everyone.

So here are some pictures I took of Brian Gordon of bgordonphotography.com:

Chris from Brasil

written by dav.d

People ask me what kind of photos I like to take and if I take “certain” pictures. I like photographing people. And I don’t find an issue with artistic nudes. Will I ever show them on my blog? Probably not. I leave the use of those photos up to the individual. It isn’t my place to broadcast them on my blog. And I try to make my blog an artistic PG rating.

These are some photos I took of Chris when the leaves were changing up the canyon.

dav.d and a castle

written by dav.d

I saw an online survey of photographers. The question was whether photographers liked having their own photograph taken. 74% said no. I guess that is one reason they picked up a camera – they want to be on the other side of the lens. Me, however, I love to be photographed. As long as I don’t look fat.

My problem? I don’t trust people with my camera. With lens and flash attached it is probably about 10-12 lbs. And people have slippery fingers.  I had the chance to go photographing the Provo Castle with another photographer. We found a model who wanted some headshots. So we photographed each other and the model.

Here is the first photo of me! Woo hoo! Brian Gordon took the photo and was kind enough to let me do my special brand of retouching. Me likey!

And check out Brian Gordon’s website.

Oh the terrors of technology

written by dav.d

This has not been a good week for me.  One would ask if it is wise to complain on a blog.  It is my blog and my rules!  ;)

Who in life doesn’t like to complain?  So back to the horrors of technology.  My Nikon D300 was having back focusing issues.  I would focus on someone’s eyes and the grass behind them would be in focus.  So I had to send my primary camera into Nikon to be serviced.

I feel naked without the camera.  Yes, I have my back up camera – my Nikon D70.  I still have all my excellent lenses and flashes and my talent.  However, I miss my Nikon D300.  I have been tempted to go find another secondary or another back up camera in the meantime.  We shall see.

The same day I sent my camera in for service my laptop (MacBook Pro 15″) stopped working.  The laptop is not my primary computer.  Laptops should never be someone’s primary computer.  They get stolen, lost or damaged and you lose data.  So knock on wood I will get it replaced or fixed soon.

But like I said – it has been a bad week.  I am hoping that things get better soon.  If BYU wins this Saturday that will be a fairytale ending to this miserable week.  Go cougars!
